Dr. Joan Watson’s (Lucy Liu) desire to be a mother was a major part of season 6. But all her efforts to adopt a child did not really lead to a positive outcome. Now that the release of “Elementary” season 7 is confirmed, is this a storyline that the writers and the viewers will revisit?
Watson’s desire to adopt a baby was not a spur-of-the-moment call. She showed serious efforts to make it happen prior to “Elementary” season 7. At one episode, she took care of an expecting mom whose baby she was supposed to adopt. Unfortunately, the woman later decided to keep a baby.
The following events in season 6 have also not been helpful to her dream of being a parent. It might now seem that this topic will be a thing of the past once “Elementary” season 7 premieres but showrunner Rob Doherty confirmed to TVLine that it is not the case.
The showrunner confirmed “Elementary” season 7 will further explore Watson’s adoption efforts but not in the early episodes. “The end of the sixth season was a pretty good example of the degree of difficulty that exists for a prospective parent like Joan Watson. Her job is unique, her living situation is unique,” Doherty explained.
It is also interesting how this will continue in “Elementary” season 7 now that Watson and Sherlock (Jonny Lee Miller) are in London. It is not yet certain if the main protagonists will stay in this city for the entirety or the most part of the next series installment. But the show will surely return with Watson and Sherlock still in London, at least for episode 1.
How things ended in the season 6 finale also introduced a whole new dimension for Joan to consider when it comes to having a child. “The end of the season is a reminder that it’s dangerous to be a friend of Joan’s, let alone a son or daughter,” Doherty added.
The season premieres of the cop procedural drama have been quite inconsistent in the past years. What fans can only hold on to for now is that “Elementary” season 7 will air sometime in 2019.
