EU Probes Musk's X Over Talk With AfD Leader Amid Election Concerns

Elon Musk’s planned discussion with Alice Weidel, leader of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, on his platform X is under scrutiny by the European Commission. This comes ahead of Germany’s upcoming election, as regulators aim to prevent misinformation under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA).

The DSA, introduced to combat illegal content like hate speech and election interference, has placed platforms like X under investigation. Since 2023, X has been monitored for its role in spreading misinformation. Violations of the DSA can lead to fines of up to 6% of global revenue or even service suspension in severe cases.

Musk’s political endorsements, including support for the AfD and critical remarks about German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, have fueled tensions. Musk labeled Scholz an "incompetent fool" after a violent incident in Magdeburg, drawing backlash from German political leaders who view the AfD as extremist.

The EU continues to investigate major platforms like X, Meta, and TikTok for compliance with the DSA. While TikTok has addressed concerns, cases against X and others remain open. Musk has often clashed with the EU over content regulations, including disputes over X’s paid verification system and access to advertising data.

EU officials, however, remain confident in the DSA’s ability to uphold democratic principles. As Musk’s influence grows in European politics, the enforcement of these regulations will test the EU’s resolve in curbing online misinformation while balancing free expression.

This controversy highlights ongoing challenges in regulating digital platforms, especially those owned by influential figures like Musk, as global political landscapes evolve.
