Being in outer space involves having to cope with a different logic than what people are used to on Earth. For starters, drinking beer can be a problem because of the lack of gravity. Although astronauts can always drink the brew right out of a straw, the experience isn’t exactly all that pleasant due to all the suds. Thanks to the efforts of engineers and one Australian brewing company, this issue could soon be solved.
The company is 4 Pines Brewing and with its partnership with engineers from Saber Astronautics Australia, a stout that they are calling Vostok Space Beer was developed, Space.com reports. Now that the brew is done, all that is needed is the actual bottle to drink it from, which poses several problems on its own.
For starters, drinking from a bottle requires gravity. On Earth, where gravity is a given, this is not a problem. In space, it’s more likely for the liquid to simply bob around in the middle of the bottle. This is the problem that the brewers and the engineers are trying to solve, and they are attempting to fund the effort via an Indiegogo campaign.
Another thing that’s worthy of note is that this new development comes mere days after Australia announced that it was creating a new space agency. It could be a coincidence but it’s more than likely that it’s not.
There are more problems associated with the matter of drinking beer in space than just having the right formula and vessel, as well, Futurism notes. No one has ever gotten drunk in space before, at least, no record of it has ever been made.
As such, there’s no telling what would happen astronauts were to ingest enough alcohol to get them inebriated or even if they do become inebriated. They might just end up getting alcohol poisoning, for all anyone knows.
