Literally, dozens of games are added to Steam’s extensive selection of titles every single day and hardly any of them are worth noticing. With a game called SpyParty coming to the platform, however, things are a little different. This multiplayer title has been something of a fable within the gaming community for over a decade and that’s also in a literal sense.
With so many mainstream games coming to Steam, it’s only natural that many more titles would slip under the radar. The case of SpyParty, however, is a little more unique in that it was deliberately kept apart from the rest of the riffraff on purpose. It’s been available on SpyParty.com for some time now and it has already sold about 24,000 copies. On Steam, it could sell even more.
As to what really makes this game so interesting is the fact that it has been in development for a decade, with its developer Chris Hecker investing much of his life’s savings and time into the title. This is basically one of those stories where the creator is so dedicated to his craft that it just makes them instantly unique from everything else.
On the matter of the actual game, it’s basically an asymmetric title that is played in a party setting where two players square off. One takes the role of the target and the other is the assassin, Forbes reports.
The goal of the target is to blend in with the crowd in the part by acting as much like a computer-controlled NPC as possible. The goal of the assassin is to kill the target with a rifle that’s loaded with only one bullet.
The premise might sound simple but by all accounts, this is an intense psychological game of cat and mouse mixed with musical statues and charades. The gripping mechanics come into full gear once the crosshairs start looking for the victim, with the assassin trying to figure out which is acting human or acting too much like a robot.
