It’s long been known that Facebook’s ultimate goal is to take over the lives of every single person in the world by carving out a slice in every single industry. The social media platform has already done this by being everywhere on the internet and now, Mark Zuckerberg’s company reportedly filed a patent for a modular smartphone.
Facebook is by no means the first to come up with a smartphone technology where practically every part is customizable. Google worked on one for years before being forced to give up on the idea, Business Insider reports.
According to the patent filing that the tech firm itself published last week, it would seem that the technology is capable of all kinds of functionality. Apart from the usual GPS and touch display, it also comes with speakers and a microphone. Ergo, it’s a smartphone.
Its modular nature is interesting as well since such phones basically provide users with the freedom to decide exactly what goes into their phones and what it can do. In theory, a modular smartphone can perform all the basic tasks expected of such a device while also being capable of extending battery life, getting louder speakers, or sporting a projector.
A good example of a semi-modular phone is the Moto Z units, where users can attach an extra battery pack or a speaker on the back of the phone. What Google tried to achieve and what Facebook seems intent on doing is to create a phone where all but the essential parts are interchangeable.
It would seem that the new patent came by the Building 8 team as well, CNET reports. This is the Facebook division that comes up with new technology that the social media platform could build. Now that it has taken over the internet, the company could be gunning for its users’ other activities as well.
