Facebook confirmed it is working on a new functionality that, when implemented, will allow users to create up to five different profiles. But the social media giant clarified that the feature in testing would only permit the creation of different profiles, and users will still have to follow the rule that discourages them from signing up for multiple accounts.
"To help people tailor their experience based on interests and relationships, we're testing a way for people to have more than one profile tied to a single Facebook account," Facebook spokesperson Leonard Lam said in a statement to TechCrunch. Lam added that the option to create multiple profiles will not change Facebook's rules and that users should still follow them to avoid receiving account penalties.
One of Facebook's long-running rules prohibits users from creating multiple accounts. "Facebook is a community where people use their authentic identities," the social media giant says on a support page. "It's against the Facebook Community Standards to maintain more than one personal account." The feature in testing appears to preserve that rule by only allowing users to create different profiles that are still anchored in a single account.
People can also set up different profiles to use to communicate or share posts with their family, friends, or professional acquaintances. They can also create different profiles that they can use for distinct topics or interests.
Facebook said users will still have to abide by the platform's rules regardless of which profile they use. For example, the social media company said people could not create profiles with the intention of imitating other people. Facebook said its system would be able to determine which profile violated certain rules, but punishments can affect the main account. This means if one of the profiles commits multiple violations, it could lead to the removal of that particular profile or of the entire account.
Meanwhile, Facebook said people would not be allowed to use different profiles under a single account on some services on the platform. Users will be required to use their main profile when managing a Page or when interacting through Facebook Dating.
Meta said the new Facebook feature is currently being tested by select users. But the report did not mention a timeline for when the multiple profiles option will go live.
