“Fallout 76” is the newest installment from Bethesda in the storied franchise and what is likely its biggest gamble yet. Even with the game nearing its release date, it would seem that both the fans and the developers are still confused as to what it is. What’s worse is that the title is seemingly shaping up to be the next “Next No Man’s Sky,” which is a category that Bethesda will definitely want to avoid.
What makes “Fallout 76” such an oddity for a lot of people is how it seems to suffer from an identity disorder. It’s trying to be too many things at once and is failing at every single one of them. As ScreenRant notes, it would seem that even the developers are not exactly sure of what the game is supposed to be. Right now, they are even leaving it up to the fans to define the game and this is not a good sign.
There are also the issues with regards to the multiplayer nature of “Fallout 76,” with Polygon noting that it really needs private servers. Aside from the fact that established fans of the franchise are finding it odd to play this game with other players, there is also the matter of different personalities colliding.
Some want to play “Fallout 76” like other games in the franchise, with exploration and discovery being the top priority. However, it would appear that other participants in the public servers are only interested in messing around. It would seem that this is proving to be a major distraction.
The issues related to “Fallout 76” have even led to Forbes pointing out the similarities between the game and another famous flop in “No Man’s Sky.” Gamers will remember how this space exploration title from Hello Games incurred the wrath of the community like nothing else. This latest outing from Bethesda could suffer the same fate.
Aside from the expected bugs and glitches that “Fallout 76” is bound to feature, there is also the feeling of betrayal that is brewing within the fan base. Many simply can’t help but feel that Bethesda is selling out in favor of multiplayer profits via microtransactions. Fans can only hope that this isn’t the case when the game releases on Nov. 14.
