The past weekend was filled with major “Far Cry 6” announcements, including its new release date. Ubisoft also revealed new details about the system that will replace Guns for Hire.
‘Far Cry 6’ release date, availability
“Far Cry 6” was originally planned to launch last February. But it was one of the games that got delayed this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s effects in video game projects last year.
After months of not having an official release date, Ubisoft has finally set the date for the “Far Cry 6” launch. The game will be available on Oct. 7 on several platforms. The first-person shooter will be released on Windows PC via Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Connect. It will also launch on old and new-gen consoles PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, as well as cloud gaming services Amazon Luna and Google Stadia.
Since the release of a new gameplay trailer, Ubisoft has opened the pre-order for “Far Cry 6” starting at $59.99 for the Standard Edition. But players who are subscribed to Ubisoft+ (formerly Uplay+), which costs $14.99 per month, should not bother buying the game because it will be available through the subscription service at launch.
Console players who have yet to acquire a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S do not have to worry about having to purchase the game twice. They can buy the PS4 or Xbox One copy of “Far Cry 6” and Ubisoft has promised to release an upgrade to new-gen consoles with no additional cost. “Please note that you will need to purchase a digital version of the game if you wish to upgrade your games on a diskless next generation console,” Ubisoft said.
‘Far Cry 6’ gameplay: What to expect
Before this weekend, all “Far Cry 6” teasers were only focused on the game’s main antagonist Anton “El Presidente” Castillo (Giancarlo Esposito). But the new gameplay deep dive focuses on the guerilla forces seeking to free Cuba from a fascist dictator and the playable character named Dani Rojas.
One of the essential gameplay features in “Far Cry 5” was the Guns for Hire system that allowed players to call their human and animal companions. It will not be available in “Far Cry 6” as Ubisoft introduces a new Fang for Hire system that will let players choose Amigos as their companions during missions.
As the new system’s name suggests, there will not be a human companion in the upcoming game. So far, Ubisoft unveiled two Amigos for “Far Cry 6,” including a dachshund named Chorizo and a crocodile named Guapo. Chorizo’s wheelchair has been modified to carry weapons. Guapo is a pet of guerilla mentor Juan Cortez, but he will also accompany Dani in combat. Guapo seems to have a very good instinct at sensing enemies and follow commands given through whistles.
