Brazilian Senator and presidential hopeful Flavio Bolsonaro met with U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington on Wednesday, following a visit to the Oval Office where he also met President Donald Trump a day earlier. The high-profile meetings come as Bolsonaro faces mounting political pressure ahead of Brazil’s October 2026 presidential election.
According to the senator, discussions with U.S. officials focused on cooperation against organized crime, rare earth minerals, and freedom of expression. Bolsonaro also said the health condition of his father, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, was raised during the talks with Trump.
Jair Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year sentence under house arrest after being convicted of plotting a coup following Brazil’s previous election. His legal troubles continue to shape the country’s political climate and influence voter sentiment ahead of the upcoming race.
Flavio Bolsonaro has recently been caught in a growing controversy after admitting that he requested financial support from a banker, who has since been jailed, to help finance a film project about his father. While the senator denied any illegal activity, the revelations sparked criticism and negatively affected his standing in public opinion polls.
Recent surveys show Bolsonaro losing some support after the scandal became public earlier this month. However, he remains statistically tied with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in several second-round election scenarios, keeping the race highly competitive.
The senator’s meetings in Washington highlight the continued relationship between conservative political figures in Brazil and the United States. Earlier this month, President Lula also visited the White House and held talks with Donald Trump, underscoring the importance of U.S.-Brazil relations during a politically tense period in Latin America.
