The anticipation surrounding a potential sequel fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao still hasn’t died down. This is despite the fact that the chances of it happening is slim to non-existent.
Floyd Mayweather Jr already said that he isn’t interested in fighting Manny Pacquiao again as he’s worried about injuries. At 42 years old, the undefeated boxer is indeed at a point in his life where his body isn’t as sturdy as it once was a decade ago.
Part of the reason why the discussion hasn’t died down is that a lot of people are still hoping for it, with some of them being boxing legends themselves. Take for instance the recent comments of “Sugar” Ray Leonard. Leonard said that Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao needs to fight again as it will be good for the boxing scene since people will undoubtedly watch it.
Floyd Mayweather Jr fighting Manny Pacquiao again will be another disappointment
The problem here is that unlike Manny Pacquiao and his trilogy bout with Erik Morales, a second fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr would likely end up like the first one, boring and anticlimactic. Sure, the fighting senator would undoubtedly come out the gate with blazing fists, but Mayweather will likely employ his methodical approach and try to outscore the Filipino and win via decision.
And while hardcore boxing fans would find the fight entertaining, the general crowd wouldn’t. And that’s where it gets dicey. The first fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao was billed as the fight of the century, and a lot of people paid good money to watch it. By the end, most walked out disappointed, and it hurt the boxing scene, so much so that Forbes even called it the “death of boxing.”
Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao unlikely to fight again
Right now, Floyd Mayweather Jr is slated to take on exhibition matches throughout 2019. Manny Pacquiao, on the other hand, has yet to announce who he’s going to fight next although multiple names have already cropped up. Some are hoping that the Filipino slugger will fight Errol Spence Jr, but Pacquiao’s camp already expressed their ambivalence for the match as the young boxer may be too much for the aging legend.
In any case, the discussion surrounding Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao fighting again should be put to rest. Even Mayweather himself appears uninterested in it and has recently maintained that he doesn’t have any plans to fight his rival again, Business Insider reported.
