As the most popular video game in the world right now, it was only a matter of time before “Fortnite Battle Royale” would find its way to the Nintendo Switch. Many believe it to be the perfect pairing, thanks to the controls provided by the hybrid console’s Joy-Cons and its portability. It basically offers the benefits of console gaming and mobile gaming in one. It even comes with a built-in voice chat feature.
While much about the news that the hugely popular online game is coming to the equally beloved console hybrid is unsurprising, some of the aspects of it are new. As Forbes notes, this is one of the worst-kept secrets in the industry. Even so, it’s an encouraging point of development that falls perfectly in line with Nintendo’s current mandate of being open to third-party companies.
In the case of “Fortnite,” it would seem that only the “Battle Royale” mode is coming to the Switch. As of writing, there has been no word on whether “Save the World” will become available or not.
This is also perfect for the developer of the game, Epic Games, which is trying as hard as it can to expand its number of players. With the addition of the Switch, the title is now available on practically every major platform, including the PC, the Xbox One and PS4 consoles, and even iOS devices. An Android version is coming soon.
Perhaps the most notable aspect of this particular development is the built-in voice chat feature. As Kotaku reports, playing the game won’t require additional apps or to speak to teammates. This might not seem like a big deal, but the Switch has not exactly been the most accommodating of consoles regarding voice chat.
With other games, the whole setup can be complicated. It requires pairing a smartphone with the Switch and installing an app on that smartphone to speak to others on the console. Fortunately, “Fortnite” players will only need to plug in their headphones with a microphone and they’re good to go.
