Adding flyable planes in “Fortnite” has made the game a thousand times more fun for a lot of players, but there appears to be an issue with the balance. While players can cause damage by using the planes’ weapons, opponents can only return that damage once the plane is destroyed. With this being the case, it was decided that adding explosive damage when the planes blow up would be a good idea.
This detail was discussed by Eric Williamson, who is the lead designer of “Fortnite.” Responding to a question on Twitter, he noted that they are looking to add explosive damage when planes blow up. As of now, though, they are still working out how exactly they are going to implement the changes that they have in mind.
“Yes, we’ve discussed a small amount of damage to passengers when a plane is destroyed. Still determining what amount feels fair,” the Tweet reads.
@erwil9 just to ask if there’s any plans to make it a bad thing to be shot down in a plane? Atm players essentially then get to reposition themselves for a fight or glide away. Perhaps receiving damage upon vehicle explosion OR can only FF/Glide if you bail out before explosion?

As of now, it would certainly appear that the planes grant players an inordinate amount of advantages that include immunity to damage from ground fighters while they are in the air. It’s basically the same kind of unbalance when fighter jets enter the fray in a war that involves troops on the ground. This threatens to skew the balance in “Fortnite” that Epic worked so hard to implement.
This is why it only makes sense to add damage when using planes in “Fortnite” so that the players who shoot the aircraft down can feel some sense of accomplishment. At the same time, it also adds to the thrill that players piloting said airplanes will experience.
On that note, the challenge then becomes actually implementing these changes. After all, if the planes in “Fortnite” become too fragile or cause too much damage when they explode, they would no longer be fun to use. So the developers have to hit the right chord in this regard.
