“Fortnite” might be the most popular video game in the world right now but no one can be faulted for saying that it is not “Game of the Year” material. However, it would appear that the judges over at the Golden Joystick Awards disagree. They just handed over the "Ultimate Game of the Year" trophy to Epic’s Battle Royale title, humiliating games like “God of War” and “Red Dead Redemption” in the process.
As Comic Book notes, “Fortnite” beat out other contenders for the honor of receiving the "Ultimate Game of the Year" award in the recent Golden Joystick Awards. Among the titles on the ballot included “God of War,” “Red Dead Redemption,” and even “Marvel's Spider-Man.” Despite having such heavy hitters as its competition, however, “Fortnite” still won.
There is no denying that “Fortnite” is huge right now, but a lot of this is because of how accessible it is. Not only is it free, but the combat is also rather simplistic, and the concept is something that most people can understand. Regardless of how much fun it is to play, though, hardly anyone can argue that there is no depth to the Battle Royale title.
Despite this fact, it still beats other worthier contenders for the award, and this is what makes the defeat so humiliating. It’s like getting passed over for “Game of the Year” in favor of some indie game developed by a single person in his basement. Of course, none of the developers and publishers behind the titles that “Fortnite” defeated expressed such sentiments.
There is also the matter of gamer preference that this result has highlighted, Digital Trends points out, primarily with regards to single-player and multiplayer games. Basically, if “Fortnite” can defeat and humiliate high-quality, story-driven games, this can be taken as a reflection of the current climate in the gaming industry.
