France is in talks with its allies to hold an informal European leaders' summit on Ukraine, possibly on Monday, according to a French presidency official. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski confirmed at the Munich Security Conference that President Emmanuel Macron had called for the meeting in Paris.
The summit comes amid growing pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump to end the war in Ukraine. European leaders are now focusing on providing security guarantees to Ukraine and enhancing Europe’s collective defense. Sikorski noted that Trump's approach, which he described as “reconnaissance through battle,” requires Europe to respond proactively.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has called for the formation of a European army, citing concerns over the reliability of U.S. protection. Discussions are ongoing about the summit's guest list, with Britain, a non-EU member, reportedly invited. Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof is expected to attend the Paris meeting, according to a Dutch news agency. It remains unclear if Zelenskiy will be invited.
The potential summit reflects Europe’s urgency in addressing the Ukraine conflict and ensuring regional stability.
