In October 2020, General Motors (GM) officially launched the GMC Hummer EV, which was a behemoth in terms of specs and size, but it was reasonably priced, starting at $80,000 for the base EV2 trim. According to recent reports, the veteran automaker has canceled this trim level.
GM Drops Hummer EV's Base EV2 Trim, Limiting Affordability and Accessibility
During the launch of the Hummer EV, GM stated that the base EV2 trim would not be available until Spring 2024, which was more than three years away, Teslarati reported. The EV2 trim is not a bad vehicle for its price, as it was expected to have two electric motors producing 625 horsepower and 7,400 lbft of torque.
However, its range was only expected to be 250 miles per charge, and it lacked features such as Crabwalk, adaptive air suspension, and four-wheel steering.
GM Authority recently reported, citing industry sources, that the Hummer EV will not have a base EV2 trim. While this is not surprising given that the Hummer EV is still sold in limited quantities, it is disappointing because the EV2 trim is the most affordable variant of the all-electric pickup truck.
Without the EV2 trim, the Hummer EV will likely remain a niche vehicle with current production and delivery figures.
Hummer EV Sees Varied Q4 Deliveries Amid High Auction Sales and Tactical Unveilings
GM reported that the Hummer EV received 2,028 deliveries in Q4 2023. Specifically, only 825 Hummer EV pickup trucks and 1,203 Hummer EV SUVs were delivered to customers this quarter.
Despite its low sales over the years, the Hummer EV has garnered some attention, with the first Hummer EV SUV fetching $500,000 at an auction and GM Defense unveiling a tactical version of the vehicle in June.
The Hummer has always been considered a symbol of excess, particularly when sold as a combustion-powered SUV. The Hummer EV appears to be the electric equivalent of its combustion-powered predecessor, with previous charging tests at an Electrify America station resulting in a ~$100 bill.
