‘Game of Thrones’ Season 7 Spoilers: Lena Headey Says Lannister Queen may be Dethroned Soon, Excited for Cersei-Tyrion Reunion

Lena Headey plays Cersei Lannister on HBO's 'Game of Thrones'; Season 6

‘Game of Thrones’ season 7 may find Cersei struggling to hold on to the Iron Throne for as long as she can. Actress Lena Headey said that her character’s reign will be quite a short one. She admitted that she was excited for a reunion between Cersei and her brother Tyrion in the next season.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Headey regaled in some of her character Cersei’s most interesting moments in season 6. She said, “I was grinning [reading the script]. Everyone is going to be aghast and thrilled and annoyed they’re on Cersei’s side for a minute.”

Cersei Lannister finally took her reign to the next level as the new ruler of the Seven Kingdoms – the first female one at that – during season 6’s finale “The Winds of Winter”. Unfortunate circumstances led to her son King Tommen’s (Dean-Charles Chapman) demise following the mass burning at the Sept. His suicide ultimately assisted Cersei in finally claiming the iron throne for herself.

Headey said, “She gets rid of all her enemies, that she knows of anyway. Then there’s that moment where she goes to see dead Tommen and she thinks, “Ah. Well. I’ll [take the crown].” It’s so wrong.”

The Emmy-nominated actress admitted that she was shocked when she found out that the season finale would conclude with Cersei as the new ruler of the Seven Kingdoms.

She said, “I read it like nine times, like, “You’re joking!” Then I’m left to wonder who’s going to take her down. She may only be there for a second. You do think, “What the f— comes next?” Then we start again to play that game we all play each season, “Who’s going to be on the Iron Throne next?”

It was speculated that Daenerys Targaryen’s (Emilia Clarke) arrival on Westeros would lead to an epic showdown between the Mother of Dragons and the Lannister Queen. When asked if Cersei’s reign would last long, Headey wasn’t very optimistic. She said, “No. Surely not! Not a chance in hell. It’s a moment of punctuation in the madness.”

Although a possible battle between two of the most powerful women in the television series would be a spectacle to behold, Headey admitted that she was as excited for a reunion between Cersei and her estranged brother Tyrion (Peter Dinklage).

According to The Independent, she said, “I’m as excited as anyone to get Cersei and Tyrion back together. It just works. Those two characters are so interesting because there’s so much hate, yet slight respect too. They’d kill each other if ever given the chance.”

‘Game of Thrones’ is a highly popular fantasy-drama television series based on George R. R. Martin’s best-selling book series called ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’. Since its debut on HBO on  April 2011, the show gained numerous accolades including 26 Primetime Emmy Award wins. Season 7 was ordered on April 2016 to be released some time in 2017.
