“Gears Of War” as a movie was already a shaky proposition from the start but the recent news about the new scriptwriter who will supposedly work on the movie just made the prospect more tremulous. The writer is known for working on such films as “xXx: Return of Xander Cage” and that movie was not exactly praised for its sharp dialogue. Is the sci-fi flick really destined for failure before the characters have even been cast?
It’s worth pointing out that out of the many video game properties that were turned into movies, so far, “Gears Of War” might just be the closest to being suitable film material. After all, it’s hardly any different to the action movies in the 80s. The only difference is the sci-fi setting and the giant monsters. Unfortunately for the filmmakers, moviegoers have become more discerning, and the legions of gamers who adore “Gears Of War” will be watching very closely.
With this being the case, it’s only to be expected that the folks working on the movie would be under a lot of pressure to deliver on a quality product. This is why the news of F. Scott Frazier being the scriptwriter for “Gears Of War” is making a lot of fans uneasy.
In the hands of a great director and writer who understand the source material, “Gears Of War” could be the kind of action flick that both video game and movie fans could be proud of. Not only would the film need to nail the character right, but the dialogue would also need to be bitingly sharp. This is what fans of the video game franchise have gotten used to, after all.
At this point, gamers can only hope that the writer for “xXx: Return of Xander Cage” can actually deliver the kind of script that they are looking for. Otherwise, “Gears Of War” is going to be the failure that a lot of people can already see coming a light-year away.
