Google agrees to pay for news content

Google agreed to pay news publishers directly to license for “high-quality content” to be posted on Google’s News and Discover platforms.

It will initially include news publications, such as Australia’s InQueensland and InDaily, Germany’s Der Spiegel, and Brazil’s Diarios Associados.

Google is also willing to pay for free access to paywalled articles on news sites.

Brad Bender, Google News’ vice president of product management, said the company is in discussions with more partners and may sign more in the coming months.

Antitrust regulators in France and Australia have demanded that Google pay for news content as publishers experienced a steep decline in advertising.

Google has, for years, dodged demands to pay for distributing news.

The EU reformed its copyright laws to give news organizations more protection in distributing their stories online.
