Google LLC will spend $1 billion in teaming up with news publishers worldwide for a service dubbed "Google News Showcase."
The service would be distinct from other news products because it leans on the editorial choices individual publishers make about which stories to show readers and how to present them
Google News Showcase enables news organizations to curate and packages their coverage within the Google News app.
It will first be rolled out in Brazil and Germany on Android devices before being launched in other countries and to iOS in the future.
Google has already inked deals with around 200 news media groups in countries such as Argentina, Australia, the UK, and Canada.
The number will grow as it expands to other countries, including India, the Netherlands, and Belgium.
A Google spokesperson said that they are negotiating with publishers from several countries but don't have anything yet to announce regarding Japan.
