Rumors have been circulating around the release of a standalone “Gwent” game from the smash hit “The Witcher 3,” but it wasn’t until recently that “CD Projekt” finally confirmed it. Yes, fans will be getting a separate “Gwent” card game of the same name. The game is expected to feature design changes, but it will play similar to “Hearthstone” by “Blizzard Entertainment.”
“Gwent” is the surprise hit of a mini-game introduced by the latest installment in “CD Projekt Red’s” phenomenal “Witcher” trilogy. In previous games, the games within the games were dice poker, arm wrestling, and bar fights. While entertaining, those mini games did not hold the same level of interest for gamers as did the card game.
Featuring colorful designs and a complex playstyle, “Gwent” touched on the competitive and imaginative nature of players targeted by “The Witcher” games. Most people expected that “Gwent” would just go over the heads of most players and make it a passing fancy. Clearly, this is just not the case.
As CNET points out, the news about the Polish company’s intent on making a standalone “Gwent” game was hardly a secret since it was leakier than cheese cloth dipped in water. Even so, players still reacted with glee after the announcement.
The company also elaborated that there would be some sort of a single player story mode wherein players will presumably battle AIs in order to achieve some sort of goal. Once gamers get tired of that, they could then take on other gamers through online ranked matches.
Ubergizmo reports that there would be a beta version of the game ahead of the actual September release, but only PC and Xbox One gamers will be able to try it. As such, owners of PS4 consoles will simply need to wait for the actual release to try the game.
