For the most part of season 1, Hanna (Esme Creed-Miles) and Marissa (Mireille Enos) were mortal enemies with the latter hell-bent on destroying the troubled teenage girl. But their dynamic is expected to drastically change in “Hanna” season 2 that is expected to premiere in 2020.
Just like in the same name movie where the series was based, Marissa is a CIA Agent tasked in locating Hanna — she is one of the genetically modified babies recruited and to be trained as super soldiers — under the agency’s Utrax program. Erik (Joel Kinnaman) essentially became Hanna’s father after her mother passed away while sneaking her out of the covert facility. Erik successfully took Hanna away, and Marissa became the designated agent to find and liquidate them. But Marissa became a useful ally coming into “Hanna” season 2.
It seemed like the history repeated itself when Erik died after he infiltrated the Utrax HQ with Hanna in the attempt to save other young recruits. But what’s different this time is Hanna got an unexpected help from Marissa. The now-rogue CIA agent seems to inherit the task of looking after the titular character, but it might take a great deal of effort and time before Hanna could fully trust Marissa in “Hanna” season 2.
This is interesting considering that one of the expected story arcs in “Hanna” season 2 is the character’s quest to find a place or a group of people where she would not feel left out. Other than Erik, she only has her best friend Sophie (Rhianne Barreto) but getting her involved would be too risky.
That leaves her with Clara (Yasmin Monet Prince), the lone Utrax recruit who agreed to escape with her, and Marissa who is likely going to become another enemy of the CIA. Evidently, these three women will be forced to trust one another in “Hanna” season 2 now that a powerful organization is likely going after them. The show is slated to return next year.
