It’s undeniable that No Man’s Sky by Hello Games was the single biggest video game disaster of 2016. The title delivered so little of the promised features that the community’s outrage temporarily drove Sean Murray into hiding. Since then, however, the studio has been quietly working on the game and providing updates that fixed many of the issues related to it. The newest one came with multiplayer.
Hello Games has actually been providing quite a few new features to No Man’s Sky over the last year, many of them huge. There’s the matter of base building, for example, and the land transportation vehicle. Now, the developer has the update called Atlas Rises to offer. Not only does it offer the ability to finally meet other players in the game, it also adds over 30 hours of new story, and the ability to teleport to planets that players have already been to, Tech Times reports.
It’s an incredibly expansive batch of updates. Naturally, there are a few caveats, one of which has to do with the multiplayer aspect. For one thing, instead of seeing the actual body of other players, they appear as a glowing ball of white light. The name and information of the players are displayed, but that’s about it.
With regards to the other contents, the new story feature will focus on missions involving an “interdimensional race”. There’s also the matter of Portals, which players can use to revisit planets, and the studio even threw in new planet types that feature innovative biomes with improved visual effects.
Coming back to the multiplayer, as Gamerant notes, it’s a good start. It’s a shame that players won’t be able to see each other as they look in each other’s own games, but being able to talk via voice chat is a refreshing change. While it’s far from ideal, players will no longer feel like they are alone in the vast universe of No Man’s Sky.
