‘House of Lies’ will be ending its run on Showtime after the network announced that season 5 will be its last. The American comedy television series first aired on January 8, 2012 and is based on the book ‘House of Lies: How Management Consultants Steal Your Watch and Then Tell You the Time’ by author Martin Kihn.
David Nevins, Showtime president and CEO, expressed his admiration for the show’s cast and crew – specifically of leading man Don Cheadle. According to the Hollywood Reporter, he said, “Over the course of its five seasons, it has tackled such hot-button topics as gender identity, wealth inequality, white privilege, police brutality, interracial relationships and code-switching with honesty and a biting sense of humor. Matthew Carnahan and Don Cheadle have been dream partners and impeccable leaders. The core cast of Don, Kristen [Bell], Ben [Schwartz] and Josh [Lawson] are one of the best comedy teams on television.”
The show reportedly managed to maintain an average of 583,000 total viewers and received mixed reviews from critics. Despite this, Cheadle’s role as the immoral and deceptive Marty Kaan earned him several accolades including a win for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a TV Series – Comedy or Musical.
Kristen Bell joined Cheadle to play the character Jeannie van der Hooven. Jeannie was introduced as a partner at the fictional consultancy Kaan & Associates. She is also Cheadle’s leading lady with whom he has an unpredictable relationship with.
The contract for the fifth season of ‘House of Lies’ was renewed in March but Nevins revealed that Showtime will no longer proceed with succeeding seasons. He added that the much-anticipated finale will be filmed on-location in Cuba. According to Kiro 7, the final episode is scheduled to air on June 12, 2016.
‘House of Lies’ follows a group of fast-talking consultants who manage to trick wealthy corporations into shelling out massive amounts of money through dishonest business negotiations. Season 5 is tapped for 10 episodes – with episode 7 scheduled to premiere on May 22.
