Thursday marked the unveiling of the Ai Pin, a unique device without a screen designed as a potential replacement for smartphones. Created by Humane, a company led by former Apple employees Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, the Ai Pin offers a new way of interacting with technology.
As a screenless wearable, it represents a shift in computing devices, aiming to integrate more seamlessly with daily life.
Revolutionary Features in a Small Package
The Ai Pin boasts several innovative features. One of the most notable is its laser ink display, capable of projecting images onto the user's palm. This approach replaces the traditional screen, encouraging users to engage more with their surroundings. The device responds to various hand gestures, like tapping fingers or tilting the hand, to control functions such as playing music.
Voice Command Takes Center Stage
With no screen, Ai Pin heavily relies on voice commands for interaction. It utilizes OpenAI's technology for voice-based search and task management. This feature integrates with the user's apps and accounts, allowing them to perform tasks like searching emails or sending messages through voice commands. The Ai Pin includes a "Catch Me Up" function, which helps users stay updated with important information from their inbox.
Nutrition and Language Translation
The Ai Pin's capabilities extend to practical everyday uses. It can provide nutrition facts for foods, like measuring sugar content in fruits, although its accuracy is still under refinement. Moreover, the device offers real-time language translation, recognizing spoken languages and translating them for the user.
Privacy and Pricing
Addressing privacy concerns, Ai Pin does not have a wake word and only activates upon manual command. It features a "Trust Light" indicating when the device is in use and employs a "personic speaker" to create a private sound bubble, ensuring conversations remain confidential.
The Ai Pin, along with its accessories, is priced at $699, with an additional monthly cellular plan through T-Mobile. Orders for the Ai Pin open on November 16, with shipping expected to begin in early 2024.

The Ai Pin introduces a novel concept in personal technology, blending innovative features with a focus on privacy and user interaction. Its screenless design challenges conventional smartphone use, potentially signaling a new direction in how we interact with technology.
