Indian food safety officials suspended a KFC unit's FSSAI license for allegedly using magnesium silicate to purify used oil, violating regulatory standards. The suspension follows a surprise inspection that uncovered unauthorized additives and non-compliance with FSSAI norms.
KFC Unit in Thoothukudi Loses FSSAI License Over Unauthorized Use of Magnesium Silicate in Oil
The food safety investigators suspended the FSSAI license of the KFC unit until further instructions were issued, according to New Indian Express.
Following a thorough investigation, food safety officials have suspended the FSSAI license of a KFC unit in Thoothukudi due to the alleged illegal use of magnesium silicate synthetic for the purification of used oil.
Speaking to TNIE, Food Safety Designated Officer Dr Mariappan said, "During a surprise inspection at the KFC unit at the Velavan hypermarket, we found the use of magnesium silicate synthetic, a food additive, to purify used oils, which is not permissible as per FSSAI standards. Not only were the used oils not destroyed, but the additive was not mentioned in the ledgers.”
"The officials confiscated 18 kg of magnesium silicate synthetic and 45 liters of used oil. They also seized 56 kg of chicken fried 12 hours ago. An oil sample purified by magnesium silicate synthetics and that of the chicken has been given for laboratory analysis."
Food Safety Officials Inspect Panipuri Vendors Amid KFC License Suspension; KFC India Defends Practices
Additionally, Mariappan stated that the food safety officials conducted inspections of numerous panipuri vendors in the district in response to allegations of using artificial coloring agents. Three samples of panipuri and panipuri masala were submitted for laboratory analysis during the final two days of the inspection. He stated that additional measures will be implemented.
Meanwhile, a statement released by KFC's spokesperson claimed that “KFC India is committed to following the best practices and international standards while cooking. High-quality oil and chicken are sourced from reputed suppliers in the country, and all applicable safety and quality standards laid down by the FSSAI and other relevant authorities are followed stringently."
“With respect to the recent media reports, we would like to clarify that the use of Magnesium Silicate as a clarifying agent is approved as per FSSAI; and all KFC chicken including marinated chicken is completely safe for consumption after cooking, as per FSSAI norms. We are actively engaging with the concerned authorities for swift and effective resolution of the issue. We assure consumers that KFC products served across the country are of the highest quality and safe for consumption.” the statement further read.
