Reports regarding Intel’s new batch of high-end processors started circulating recently, indicating that the company was working on an 18-core, 36-thread chip. The company has not only just confirmed that this is indeed the case, it has even released the price for getting just one of these processors. Now, the pressure is mounting for AMD to reveal how much its own high-end Threadripper processors are going to cost.
Intel recently announced the new batch of its “Core X” processors, which included the monstrous i9 chip with 18 cores, The Verge reports. There’s no doubt at this point that the chip is aimed squarely at PC gamers and customers who need the extra juice for making movies or other demanding computing tasks.
For the top of the line product, customers can expect to spend $1,999. That’s for the Core i9 Extreme Edition i9-7980XE, which is pretty much the best that Intel has to offer. At the lower end of the spectrum is the 4-Core i5-7640X, which costs $242. That’s quite a huge difference.
After that, there’s the i7 range, which can cost $339 or $599 depending on which specifications customers want. Whatever the case may be, it’s clear now that for those who really want to overclock their processors, they’ll need to give up an arm and a leg.
For AMD’s part, the Intel rival also recently announced that it would be offering chips with considerable processing power in the form of a 12-core, 14-core, and 16-core processor lineup. These will fall under the Threadripper batch, which was meant to deal a huge blow on Intel, PC World reports.
Technically, AMD could still make things difficult for its main competitor by disclosing much better prices and specifications of its chips. It’s unlikely that many would go the 18-core route anyway, so the main battleground will likely be the mid-range arena.
