Iran dismissed on Saturday the possibility of normalizing diplomatic relations with Israel, describing recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump as “wishful thinking.” Trump, who brokered the Abraham Accords during his first term, recently hinted that even Iran might one day join the agreement. The Abraham Accords, signed between Israel and four Muslim-majority nations, were a hallmark of Trump’s Middle East policy aimed at fostering peace and economic cooperation.
Speaking to Iranian state television, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi firmly rejected the notion of any future recognition of Israel, labeling it an “occupied regime” responsible for “genocide and the killing of children.” Araqchi emphasized that Tehran’s stance remains unchanged, asserting that Iran will never acknowledge Israel or engage in normalization efforts.
Trump’s recent comments, made late last month, reignited discussion over potential new members of the Abraham Accords. He stated, “Who knows, maybe even Iran can get in there,” implying that future diplomacy might bridge one of the deepest divides in the region. However, Iran’s leadership swiftly refuted the idea, underscoring its long-standing support for the Palestinian cause and opposition to Israeli policies.
The statement from Tehran highlights ongoing tension between Iran and the United States over Middle East peace efforts, regional influence, and sanctions. Analysts say Trump’s suggestion reflects his continued interest in showcasing his diplomatic achievements in the region. Still, given Iran’s current political climate and ideological stance, any move toward normalization appears highly unlikely.
This firm rejection reaffirms Iran’s position in contrast to several Arab states that have chosen to formalize ties with Israel, illustrating the complex and deeply rooted nature of Middle Eastern geopolitics.
