The shopping app Temu, which sells everything from automotive supplies and home goods to jewelry and clothing, has become known for its strikingly attractive prices.
Buyers and sellers are responding to this model. Temu’s app was recently named an Editor’s Choice on the Google Play app store, and it has a rating of 4.6 stars on the platform after over 10 million downloads and over 157,000 reviews.
Almost everything on Temu is under $10, and many items approach wholesale prices. It’s not uncommon to see items listed at $1 or less, and Temu seems to constantly feature sales and free shipping promotions.
While the competitive prices and variety of goods offered on the platform have led Temu to the top spot on the list of most downloaded apps in the U.S., some consumers may be wary of just how the company is able to offer such unprecedented prices. Does this mean Temu’s items are lower quality or that they’re not safe to order?
In short, the answer to those questions is no, according to a Temu spokesperson. The company explained that its low prices are achieved thanks to what it calls a “Next-Gen Manufacturing” model, which utilizes consumer insights to inform manufacturers and sellers on how best to fit supply to demand.
“Temu is positioning itself at the forefront of the next era of e-commerce, which we believe will move beyond disintermediating or optimizing the manufacturing supply chain into matching individualized needs and wants with global resources and delivering them efficiently,” said a Temu spokesman in a recent press release. “This shift will lead to the creation of legions of new businesses, and Temu is prepared to support and enable them.”
Is Temu a Legitimate Business?
Yes, Temu is a legitimate business. The company sells quality items from established sellers and brands and backs up all purchases with its Temu Purchase Protection Program. The program protects buyers with a guaranteed refund if an item does not match the listing description, arrives damaged, or is lost in the mail.
Temu works with leading postal carriers, including UPS, FedEx, and USPS to ship items via a streamlined global network of manufacturers and suppliers.
“Many of the sellers in our global network have accrued years of experience and expertise in supplying products to global brands and consumers,” said a Temu spokesperson. “They can produce quality prices at the most efficient costs as a result of the economies of scale and technological innovation they have built up over the years.”
How Next-Generation Manufacturing Works on Temu
In addition to working with legitimate, well-established brands and sellers, Temu provides precise demand forecasting services to help reduce production costs. Sellers save on overhead from wasted inventory and gain insights into their target audience without expensive marketing spending.
Temu’s business model is designed to connect sellers to consumers, provide a reliable supply chain, and offer helpful insights on product design and development. In exchange for these cost-saving services, the company asks sellers to pass along savings to consumers in the form of low prices. This is the Next-Gen Manufacturing foundation of Temu’s business.
“Consumers can enjoy affordable prices with the flexibility of buying just what they need while having access to the widest available choice of products that meet their different needs,” explained a Temu spokesperson.
“At the same time, consumers can find unique products developed by manufacturers enabled by Temu’s Next-Gen Manufacturing business model. These on-trend products are developed with the benefit of real-time insights into consumer preferences, resulting in a closer match to what consumers want.”
Does Temu Have Good-Quality Products?
Yes, Temu has good-quality products. Its rock bottom prices are due to reduced production and marketing costs as a result of the Next-Gen Manufacturing model, not inferior-quality production methods or materials. Companies can sell quality products for less on Temu because the platform helps them save money at various points of the supply chain.
Temu features 29 general categories, with over 250 subcategories of merchandise. Some examples of general categories are musical instruments, women’s clothing, and electronics.
Specific items featured on the platform range from everyday products such as silverware and towels, to niche items such as decorative lawn ornaments and DIY craft supplies.
Temu vets all of its sellers for quality and displays both aggregated review ratings for items and sellers and individual feedback, so shoppers can thoroughly research the quality of a product before making a purchase.
“Temu offers detailed information on expected delivery times, as well as product reviews and information about the sellers to help consumers with their purchase decisions,” said the spokesperson. “Temu works with global payment and logistics providers to ensure that orders are secure and fulfilled with ease and convenience.”
Legitimacy and Transparency
When trying to decide whether a company or product is legitimate, transparency is key. A company that hides its methods is less likely to be trusted. Temu emphasizes transparency throughout its website and press. In clearly explaining its Next-Gen Manufacturing strategy the company seeks to assure customers who may be surprised at such economical prices that these prices are achieved in a legitimate and mutually beneficial manner.
The goal is written into the company’s name. Temu stands for “Team Up, Price Down,” the company’s guiding motto. The Temu philosophy is to collaborate with sellers to drive down prices in a way that’s beneficial for both sellers and shoppers. Sellers cut overhead costs, and shoppers get more of the products they want and fewer of those they don’t want, all listed at more affordable prices.
While this system may seem too good to be true, it’s simply the result of the next evolution of manufacturing and e-commerce strategy, one that utilizes more precise demand forecasting and involves Temu collaborating at all points of the supply chain, including product design. Traditional e-commerce models focus on optimizing supply chains for products that have already been developed and do not involve real-time, demand-driven product design.
