JD Vance has emerged as the frontrunner for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination, claiming victory in the Conservative Political Action Conference straw poll held this year in Grapevine, Texas. The Vice President secured roughly 53% of votes cast by more than 1,600 CPAC attendees, reinforcing his strong standing within Donald Trump's Make America Great Again movement.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio finished in second place with 35% of the vote, a dramatic rise from the 3% he received at last year's CPAC gathering in Oxon Hill, Maryland. Political analysts attribute Rubio's surge to his increasingly prominent role in U.S. foreign policy, particularly his high-profile involvement in matters concerning Venezuela and Iran. No other potential 2028 contender managed to capture more than 2% of the vote.
CPAC, one of the most influential annual gatherings for conservative lawmakers, activists, and political hopefuls, draws heavily from the Republican Party's right wing. While its straw poll does not guarantee a future nominee, it does reflect where enthusiasm and momentum currently stand among core MAGA supporters. With President Trump constitutionally barred from seeking a third term, the race for 2028 is already generating significant interest.
Attendees who spoke with reporters praised both candidates. Vance supporters highlighted his authentic personality and public expressions of Christian faith, while Rubio backers pointed to his commanding presence, conservative consistency, and diplomatic achievements. Several CPAC participants expressed interest in seeing both men share a presidential ticket in 2028.
Vance previously topped the CPAC straw poll in 2024 with 61% of the vote, suggesting sustained grassroots support. As the 2028 election cycle begins taking shape, both Vance and Rubio appear well-positioned to compete for the Republican nomination and the loyalty of Trump's devoted political base.
