President Joe Biden responded with humor and a touch of sarcasm to the latest claims made by former President Donald Trump, who has accused the Democratic Party of orchestrating a coup to remove him from the 2024 presidential race. The exchange unfolded as the Democratic National Convention prepared to kick off, setting the stage for a heated election cycle.
Trump, who has frequently taken to social media to air his grievances, recently asserted that Democrats, including Vice President Kamala Harris, had staged what he described as “the first-ever coup in America” to push Biden out of the top spot on the Democratic ticket. In a message posted to Truth Social, Trump claimed that Biden had been told he was losing to Trump and was subsequently "fired" from the presidential race.
CNN’s Kaitlan Collins seized the moment to ask Biden for his reaction to Trump’s provocative statements during a press event on August 19, just hours before the Democratic National Convention was set to begin. With a smile, Biden quipped that Trump’s “stability is still questionable,” dismissing the former president’s accusations as baseless.
Trump, undeterred by Biden’s light-hearted jab, continued his attacks on Harris, labeling her a “Marxist,” “communist,” and a “STONE COLD LOSER” who he predicted would fail in the upcoming 2024 election. He warned that if Harris were to succeed, the United States would devolve into what he called a “Communist, Crime Ridden Garbage Dump.”
These remarks come on the heels of Biden’s decision to step back from his campaign in late July, opting to endorse Harris as his successor. Biden, who has faced mounting concerns about his health and age, framed his withdrawal as an act of patriotism, stating in a July 24 announcement that it was time to “pass the torch to a new generation.”
Biden’s decision has been met with mixed reactions, but it has not deterred Trump from framing the transition as part of a broader conspiracy against him. The former president’s rhetoric, often marked by dramatic and hyperbolic claims, continues to energize his base, even as it raises questions about his mental acuity and fitness for office—a theme that Biden subtly echoed in his response.
As the Democratic National Convention unfolds, the stage is set for a contentious election battle. Harris, now positioned as the Democratic nominee, faces the challenge of uniting the party and appealing to voters who are weary of the divisive political climate. Meanwhile, Trump’s relentless attacks signal a campaign strategy that will focus heavily on discrediting his opponents and sowing doubt about the integrity of the election process.
With Biden stepping back, the 2024 race will likely be defined by new dynamics, as Harris takes center stage and Trump continues his quest to return to the White House, armed with his signature brand of political theater.
