The January 6 Capitol insurrection in the latest reports revealed that not only lawmakers inside the chambers were in danger but also vice president-elect Kamala Harris on that day. As the riots took place, Harris was revealed to have come within yards of the pipe bomb placed at the Democratic National Committee headquarters.
CNN reports that Harris, who was the vice president-elect at the time, drove within yards of a pipe bomb placed on a bench outside the DNC headquarters on January 6, 2021, according to people familiar with the matter. Harris would be inside the DNC headquarters for two hours before the bomb would be discovered.
The recent revelations have since highlighted a security lapse as local law enforcement was struggling to protect lawmakers in the Capitol and prevent the thousands of pro-Trump supporters from further breaking inside and causing damage to the property. Sources told CNN that Harris arrived at the DNC headquarters in Washington with her motorcade through the garage leading to the parking deck where the pipe bomb was discovered.
Harris’s whereabouts on January 6 were not previously reported until recently. An internal US Capitol Police timeline revealed that an unidentified “protectee” was removed from the DNC building at around 1:14 p.m. ET, which was seven minutes before law enforcement discovered the bomb. Earlier in January, Harris was revealed to be the one law enforcement evacuated from the building.
Another source told CNN that Harris was evacuated in an alternate route away from the bomb even as her Secret Service detail checked the interior of the building, including the driveway, parking deck, and the entrances and exits ahead of her arrival.
In other related news, a Democratic lawmaker mocked the claim repeatedly pushed by former President Donald Trump that his vice president Mike Pence had the power to overturn the 2020 election results. Rep. Zoe Lofgren, who serves on the congressional committee probing the insurrection, said that if the former president’s logic is correct, then in the 2024 elections, Harris will have the authority to choose the next president.
To note, the vice president ultimately does not have the authority to overturn election results regardless of the will of the voters.
“I guess the former president is saying that the vice president gets to choose the next president,” said Lofgren on CNN. “In which case, Kamala Harris will be presiding at the counting of the votes. I guess he’s saying she gets to choose who the next president is.”
