Kate Middleton and Prince William have been hounded with divorce rumors and cheating allegations in the past weeks. Now, it has brought up another negative claim that Prince Charles’s son treated Middleton “like a servant” when they were still in college.
It is no secret that Middleton and Prince William met in 2001 at St. Andrews University, a public institution in Fife, Scotland. Earlier reports have it that the royal prince was swooned upon seeing Middleton on stage during a charity fashion show at the university.
Fans may agree that that meet-cute story can pass as a captivating arc in a romantic movie. However, reports recently brought up some accounts from the book of royal expert and biographer Katie Nicholl claiming that Prince William was not exactly charming toward his then-girlfriend Middleton.
"William could be an overwhelming presence at times, Kate felt taken for granted - treated like a servant rather than a girlfriend,” Nicholl wrote (via The Sun). There were also claims from people who reportedly knew them in college that agree with Nicholl’s accounts.
“He could be flip and curt with her. She didn't like it when he ignored her and got into conversation with someone as though she wasn't there,” The Sun quoted a “university friend” saying about Middleton and Prince William. "He expected Kate to run after him and the longer they knew each other, the more he seemed to keep her on a tight leash."
Despite the claims of an unbalanced relationship, Middleton and Prince William actually graduated together in 2005, but as fans already know it would take another six years before they got married. The Duchess of Cambridge confirmed in 2010 that they did break up in 2007, but that it also turned to be a wise decision on her part.
"I think I at the time wasn't very happy about it, but actually it made me a stronger person," Middleton said in an interview following their engagement. "You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn't realized, or I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you are younger and I really valued that time for me as well although I didn't think it at the time." Middleton and Prince William got engaged in 2010 and tied the knot April of the following year. They later assumed the royal titles Duchess and Duke of Cambridge.
