During the offseason, fans and analysts alike have been speculating if coach Frank Vogel will be using LeBron James as a point guard this coming season. Vogel, despite being prodded by the media to divulge some information about the subject, refuses to unveil his plans just yet.
That is, until now. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin saw firsthand what it was like for LeBron James to play as the 1 during one of the Lakers’ practice games. To put it briefly, the team is still on the experimental phase with their lineup to see what works and what needs improving.
McMenamin highlighted a play where Vogel was trying to simulate a scenario where the team was faced with a three-point deficit late into the fourth. LeBron James was playing as a point guard, and Anthony Davis was occupying the center position.
LeBron James said it doesn’t matter what position he’s playing
Suffice to say that the Lakers still need to work on this rotation as the simulation ended with the starters losing the game. LeBron James said that all of these are in preparation for the arduous journey ahead, something that will challenge the Lakers’ roster down to their core.
“I mean; we have so many different lineup packages that we can probably go to throughout the course of the season. So we're just trying out a few things now in practice – going with smaller lineups, going with bigger lineups, going with quicker lineups, going with slower lineups,” LeBron James said. He added that it doesn’t matter to him what position he occupies as his role in the team is to create opportunities, whether for himself or the rest of the squad.
LeBron James being well-rested is bad news for the league
Throughout his career, the 34-year-old has been known to be quite the stellar passer, threading the ball through tight defenses that would result in a teammate getting an easy layup or an uncontested three. So it isn’t that surprising that Vogel is playing with the idea of LeBron James being the playmaker.
The Lakers are looking to go big this year after shelling out a trove of assets and future picks to shore up its roster. The problem is that other superteams have emerged during the offseason. The Clippers, Celtics, Sixers, Rockets, and several more got their lineup solidified. The good news is that LeBron James managed to get a ton of rest this year. Vogel even said that with James fully rested, it’s going to be bad news for the rest of the league.
