The Los Angeles Lakers are one of the teams that are the running favorites to win the 2019-2020 Playoffs. This isn’t surprising given the Lakers’ roster is brimming with talent, both on its starting lineup and on the bench.
And if recent reports are any indication, the Los Angeles Lakers are apparently not finished bolstering its ranks. The last guy they’re apparently eyeing is Andre Iguodala despite slim chances of landing the 2015 Finals MVP.
Right now, Iggy is still with the Memphis Grizzlies even though he’s not expected to stay with the team given that they’re currently rebuilding. While there are a lot of interests surrounding Iggy, the bad news for the Grizzlies is that it’s too deep in the offseason and teams – including the Los Angeles Lakers – have spent most of their assets and money already.
Los Angeles Lakers needs to produce results now
Indeed, the Lakers acquiring Anthony Davis drained the team of considerable future assets, which means that the roster needs to produce now to justify that gamble. This is why the L.A. is adamant to acquire Iggy as his addition to the roster will further solidify the team’s chances of winning next year.
With Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson still in recovery, there are only a few teams that can contend against the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2018-2019 Playoffs. Arguably the biggest obstacle standing in front of the Lakers is the Clippers.
Los Angeles Lakers needs Andre Iguodala to bolter defensive capacity
Kawhi Leonard and Paul George is a potent duo, there’s no doubt about that. But if the Los Angeles Lakers get Iguodala and pair him against either of the Clippers’ main core, then both superstars will have their offensive output reduced. After all, Iggy has built his career as an elite defender, especially on the wing. Guarding Leonard or George would simply be another day at the office for the 35-year-old.
But again, this is all banking on the chance that Grizzlies will buy out Iggy, which also has a slim chance happening. Nevertheless, reports are coming in that the Los Angeles Lakers are still reserving an open spot for Iguodala should that possibility – no matter how small – transitions to reality.
