For a lot of older gamers who got into the MMORPG scene in the early 2000s, Runescape is likely a familiar title. After 2005, the game has largely fallen into obscurity, overshadowed by newer, grander games. However, it turns out that the title is actually still chugging along and even has a mobile version coming up. Apparently, it will also have crossplay capability with the PC.
In the larger scheme of the video game media industry, Runescape may no longer be big potatoes. However, with the game having attracted 250 million players recently due to its numerous updates and its free-to-play system, the title is still quite relevant. For clarity’s sake, it’s worth noting that the version coming to mobile is the Old-school Runescape, Venture Beat reports.
Jagex, the development studio behind the game also sent the publication a copy of its press release. In it, COO Phil Mansell explains why the company is going in this direction with regards to the game.
“This is a real step change for MMORPGs and a signal of Jagex’s intent to continue to push the boundaries of live games,” Mansell said. “The RuneScape titles will become the first mainstream and established Western MMORPGs on mobile in full, and the first to deliver interoperable play between PC and mobile platforms. We believe in taking our games to wherever our players want them; recent player surveys showed an overwhelming 90 percent of active players and 64 percent of former players telling us of their very high intent-to- play on mobile.”
One of the more notable aspects of this development would definitely be the crossplay between the mobile version and the PC, Eurogamer reports. Basically, players can take their characters and use them on both platforms while retaining data whenever they change. So the progress that gamers make while playing on their phones remain when they play on the PC again.
