Apple may have another mini event in the works, where new models of the MacBook Pro and an updated Mac mini could be announced. The higher-end laptops are expected to ship soon with more powerful versions of the M2 chip, while Apple could also bring its new-generation SoC to the Mac mini line.
Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reiterated his forecast that Apple could be nearing the launch of the refreshed 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops. These products should not be confused with the 13-inch MacBook Pro Apple released earlier this year that included the standard M2 SoC.
The laptops with larger screens are expected to launch with the M2 Pro and M2 Max, which would directly follow similarly named chips from Apple last year. In Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter, the journalist said the M2 Max would deliver a total of 12 CPU cores with 8 performance and 4 efficiency cores. It is also expected to provide up to 38 GPU cores and up to 64GB unified RAM configurations.
The reported M2 Max specs hint at several upgrades from its predecessor. The M1 Pro and M1 Max shipped with 10 CPU cores last year, while the latter offered a higher 32 graphics cores.
Gurman added that other changes to the upcoming 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro will be “minimal.” This could mean that no design tweaks can be expected this year, which is not surprising. Apple just introduced the new design layout for the 2021 MacBook Pro models that notably featured the first display notch on an Apple laptop.
Aside from the new MacBook Pros, Apple is also widely expected to launch an updated Mac mini in the near future. While Apple is reportedly testing a variant with M2 Pro, the small-sized desktop computer is most likely to ship with the baseline version of the M2 chip.
It remains to be seen when Apple will announce the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, as well as the next Mac mini. But the same reports suggested that November could be a likely timeline.
