Fox News commentator Ben Domenech has delivered a stinging critique of former Florida Representative Matt Gaetz, calling him "unqualified to be your babysitter" during a panel discussion on Sunday. The remarks follow Gaetz's controversial nomination and subsequent withdrawal as President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. attorney general.
Gaetz Faces Backlash Amid Ethics Investigation
Gaetz, who stepped down from Congress after his nomination, has been embroiled in a House Ethics Committee investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct and drug use. While the Department of Justice decided in 2023 not to pursue federal sex-trafficking charges against him, the ethics investigation remains unresolved.
Domenech criticized Gaetz's suitability for any role of responsibility, stating, “Matt Gaetz is someone who is not just unqualified for this job. He is unqualified to do any kind of work for you.”
Democratic strategist Leslie Marshall echoed Domenech's sentiment, citing the allegations against Gaetz, including claims he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl. “I’m the mother of a 16-year-old girl. I hear ‘17-year-old girl’—this is disgusting. Democrat or Republican, we should have more of a moral compass than this in our nation,” she said.
Nomination Sparks Debate
Gaetz’s nomination by Trump on November 13 was met with widespread criticism, even from some within his own party. His resignation from Congress and subsequent withdrawal from consideration came after it became evident he lacked sufficient Senate support for confirmation.
Domenech argued that Gaetz’s withdrawal was inevitable. “He wasn’t even close to getting to 50 votes,” Domenech said during the panel, highlighting the bipartisan skepticism surrounding his nomination.
Marshall went further, questioning Gaetz's basic trustworthiness. “Would you trust him to take your daughter to the movies?” she asked. “I would not trust him to drive her in an Uber, which might be his next job.”
Gaetz Denies Wrongdoing and Praises Bondi’s Nomination
In his withdrawal statement, Gaetz framed his decision as an effort to avoid distracting from the Trump-Vance transition. “It is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump-Vance transition,” he said.
Shortly after Gaetz withdrew, Trump nominated former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi for the attorney general position, describing her as a “stellar selection.” Gaetz expressed his support for Bondi, stating she would bring “needed reforms” to the Department of Justice.
