A former Bush administration official has called on President-elect Donald Trump to use the CIA to "overthrow the terrorist Iranian regime," citing mounting concerns over Iran’s nuclear ambitions and its threat to global stability. Jed Babbin, who served as deputy undersecretary of defense under President George H.W. Bush, argued that the incoming Trump administration must take aggressive steps to dismantle Tehran’s leadership in a recent column for The Washington Times.
Iran’s Escalating Nuclear Threat
Babbin’s remarks come as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) revealed troubling findings about Iran's nuclear program. According to its latest report, Tehran has amassed 6,604.4 kilograms of enriched uranium, an increase of nearly 2,000 pounds since August, signaling a potential path toward weaponization. Iran’s obstruction of IAEA monitoring efforts further violates commitments made under the 2015 nuclear agreement, adding to global fears about its intentions.
“The production and accumulation of high-enriched uranium by Iran, the only non-nuclear-weapon state to do so, adds to the agency's concerns,” the IAEA warned.
Babbin stated that if Iran achieves nuclear weapons capability, it could dramatically alter global security dynamics. He cited the country’s growing influence in the Middle East and alleged support for terrorist activities as pressing reasons for intervention.
Assassination Plots and Rising Tensions
Babbin also referenced recent developments to underscore the urgency of his proposal. In early November, the Department of Justice charged an individual allegedly connected to Iran with plotting to assassinate President-elect Trump. The DOJ claimed the attack was retaliation for the 2020 U.S. drone strike that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.
Attorney General Merrick Garland described Iran as one of the most significant threats to U.S. national security, although Tehran has denied any involvement in the plot.
Babbin linked the alleged assassination attempts to what he described as the "terrorist Iranian regime’s desperation" to counteract pressure from Washington.
A Strategy for Regime Change
Babbin argued that Trump’s second term must go beyond sanctions and diplomatic isolation, advocating for direct action to overthrow Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s regime. He suggested that the U.S. could support anti-regime factions, including the Balochis, Kurds, Ahwazis, and Azeris, by providing them with weapons, intelligence, and funding to destabilize Tehran.
“Given the right resources, these forces could topple the regime and restore regional balance,” Babbin wrote.
Trump’s first term saw a “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran, including the withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal, crippling sanctions, and the designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. Babbin contends that such strategies should now evolve into more direct action to neutralize the Iranian threat permanently.
Social Media Reacts
Babbin’s proposal ignited heated debate online, with netizens expressing a wide range of opinions:
- @FreedomFirst24: “Finally, someone says what needs to be done. Iran has terrorized the world for too long!”
- @PeaceNowGlobal: “This is reckless warmongering. Regime change always leads to more chaos, not peace.”
- @PolicyGuru88: “Supporting insurgents inside Iran? Haven’t we learned from past disasters like Iraq?”
- @RealAmericanVoice: “Babbin has a point. Iran has proven time and again that diplomacy doesn’t work.”
- @MiddleEastWatcher: “This is a dangerous path. It risks igniting a broader regional conflict.”
- @HumanRightsAdvocacy: “What about the Iranian civilians? We can’t let them suffer for geopolitical games.”
