McDonald's Japan is known to release sakura-flavored McFlurrys when springtime is approaching. This is the fast-food's way of celebrating the season of cherry blossoms, but this year, it is not offering a soft-serve ice cream but a pie dessert.
Rather than selling sakura McFlurry for dessert this spring, McDonald's Japan chose to be more traditional and unveiled the new Sakura Mochi Pie. The fast-food giant used a traditional Japanese sweet as inspiration to create this new dessert.
As per SoraNews24, McDonald's Japan's new Sakura Mochi Pie is different from the previous sakura treats because it does not have the strong flavor of the cherry fruit or the aromatic scent of florals. Rather, the new food item offers a distinct flavor created from the combination of red bean paste filling, rice cake, and real pickled cherry blossom leaf.
The Sakura Mochi Pie's color is also very subtle as the mochi is presented in light pink color. The ingredients that made up the new dessert of McDonald's Japan, will give customers a perfect blending of the sweet, salty, and floral flavor that is uniquely Japanese.
Mochi or rice cake is very popular in Japan and these are made in various flavors, and usually sold throughout the year. For the McDonald's Japan's mochi pie, it was described as having the taste of Japanese springtime wrapped in a small sweet bundle of treats. As per Entabe, the light sweetness of the red bean paste simply magnifies the natural cherry blossom flavor.
The rice cake dessert is encased in the crunchy sakura-flavored crust to complete the pie dessert with the authentic taste of cherry blossom. The Sakura Mochi Pie is served in attractive packaging that features the sakura and its color of green and pink.
Finally, customers can buy the new dessert at McDonald's Japan's restaurant outlets across the country from March 23 until mid-April. It can be purchased for 150 yen per piece which is around US$1.26. Apparently, this is only available in the stores for a limited time so fans should head to the nearest McDonald's branches now to try this seasonal dessert.
