Sea of Thieves is the pirating simulator that Microsoft is heavily invested in, viewing the game as a major system seller for the Xbox One. The company really needs it to work, as well, with sales of the console lagging behind even the newcomer, the Nintendo Switch. As a result, the software giant is going all-out with its promotion, which includes a treasure hunt of Golden Bananas worth $100,000 and setting a new Guinness World Record involving a Human Cannonball.
For some context, the hunt for the Golden Bananas is quite real and is open to teams in the UK, the US, Australia, Canada, Germany, and France, Tech Radar reports. The hunt will involve deciphering clues to find the right spot on the map. These clues will be provided to the participants intermittently, with riddles being revealed every three or four hours starting March 19th.
Participants will need to solve these riddles, submit their answers and only those who can get the initial answers right will be given the final clue that will unravel the mysteries behind the location of the bananas. Only one team will be able to claim the prize, which again is worth $100,000.
As far as promotional events go, a worldwide treasure hunt would certainly count as a major investment. However, Microsoft decided to go even further with the attempt to set a new world record by shooting a person from a cannon.
David “The Bullet” Smith was recently shot out of a cannon and set a new record under the category of the Greatest Distance Travelled as a Human Cannonball. The Guinness World Records organization made the new achievement known via its official Twitter account, congratulating the parties involved for the new record.
“Congratulations to @Xbox , @SeaOfThieves and David "The Bullet" Smith on achieving a NEW record for farthest distance for a human to be fired from a cannon! This attempt was explosively successful,” the Tweet reads.
