The US government is reportedly concerned about the Internet cables that are lying underwater. According to the New York Times, Russian submarines and spy ships have been spotted operating near the cables. The activity was observed as “alarming” despite the fact that there is no cable cutting yet, considering the fact that the cables carry USD10 trillion worth of daily transactions. The media site suggests a possibility that Russia could easily halt these vital operations from a hardest-to-reach location.
On the other hand, the Washington Post points out that the cables shouldn’t worry about Russia at the moment. Andrea Peterson for the site posits that although Russia will most likely succumb to using the cables as a strategy to strike the US, sharks, and even human error, can be the very reasons should there be cable disruption.
“When even accidents can cause major problems, it's understandable that government officials might fear actual attacks — especially given how reliant many functions of our modern economy are on near-instantaneous communication,” she said.
