As a franchise that mostly revolved around Nintendo’s consoles and handhelds, there are many who won’t know what they are getting into with Monster Hunter World. Based on recent impressions, however, it seems the title retains the series’ notorious difficulty level. MHW is apparently incredibly challenging, which is just how fans like it.
For a good approximation of what the experience of the game is going to be like for those new to the franchise, Polygon posted an article documenting exactly this scenario. There are many things about MHW that makes it an incredible game, but the one thing that is consistent is how hard monster hunting is, regardless of your skill level.
The tester based the experience on a beta build of the game, so there are inevitably going to be differences. Even so, the post does work as a decent blueprint that sets the scene for new players.
MHW basically takes players to a new world, filled with new monsters and beasts to slay. This is where all the new mechanics and updated graphics come in, which are apparently quite impressive.
According to what testers over at Gamespot experienced during their 12-hour session, one of the main takeaways is that it is still incredibly difficult. There are going to be a lot of deaths, or in the case of Monster Hunter’s iconic mechanic, a lot of failures accompanied with getting rescued.
The difficulty is not all about punishing weak players either. The challenges are intended to provide gamers with the opportunity to learn from their failures and get stronger by familiarizing themselves with their weapons, class, and abilities.
While MHW does appear to be less difficult than past Monster Hunter games, this is largely due to the updated controls. Everything else about it is still brutal and unforgiving, which is why fans love it so much.
