The Trump administration was heavily criticized for its policy of separating thousands of children from their parents at the southern border. As the Biden administration moves to reunite every single child with their parents in the midst of an influx of migrants, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi described the current situation at the border as “a crisis.”
Speaking on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Pelosi pointed out that Joe Biden has only been in office for almost two months and said that he should be given time to properly deal with the situation at the border. However, the House Speaker noted that the Biden administration is already at work to address the crisis. The surge of migrants at the border includes thousands of children, a significant portion of which are unaccompanied by parents. Government officials have had difficulty providing shelter to the migrants.
“As far as the children are concerned, you can imagine me as a mother of five, every minute that a parent is separated from their child to me is a crisis,” said the House Speaker. “So we want this to move along expeditiously.”
The Trump administration’s hardline stance on immigration has led to thousands of children getting detained in facilities at the border, getting separated from their parents back in 2018. At the time, the administration defended the practice saying that it was to deter illegal immigration.
Biden’s proposed immigration policy would seek to provide 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country with a way to obtain legal citizenship. Interviews with some of the migrants at the border as of late revealed that the migrants who have crossed said that they have come to America specifically in the hopes of obtaining legal citizenship under the Biden administration.
In other news, a 21-year-old man from Michigan was charged Tuesday for threatening to kill Biden, Pelosi, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, all Democrats, in the hopes of sparking an American revolution. The charges come as FBI Director Christopher Wray had previously warned of the rise of extremism in the country, especially after the January 6 insurrection.
Whitmer had already previously been a target of right-wing extremists in 2020. The group of extremists had plotted to kidnap her prior to the November elections, according to prosecutors.
