As a game set in World War II, it’s only to be expected that Call of Duty: WWII would have its fair share of sad moments. In the newest trailer that the developers released, however, it seems they really leaned on the tear-jerking factor. The clip features Private Ronald “Red” Daniels, who is about as green of a soldier as one can get, and takes viewers through his experiences during the war. Oh, and there are swastikas now.
While the trailer is pretty straightforward in the narrative it is trying to push, on the surface, there is actually a lot about the clip that needs to be unpacked. As PC Gamer notes, this new video is Sledgehammer’s way of making it clear that there will be no Nazi POV in the game. What’s more, COD: WWII puts stark emphasis on the fact that the Nazis are the bad guys, PC Gamer notes.
In previous COD games set in the same period, battles were set in such a way as to make Nazis enemy combatants that simply needed to be shot. It would appear that the developers wanted players to make no mistake in seeing the Nazis for who they are in this new game, complete with a close-up view of a scarred Nazi officer. That’s basically a telltale sign of an evil monster, as far as this setting is concerned.
In contrast, Private Daniels and his companions are painted as the brave Americans racing through Europe to save their comrades and end the war. After surviving D-Day, the video features the squad participating in many other iconic battles and locations, such as Hürtgen Forest and the Battle of the Bulge.
The game is set for release on November 3rd, Gamespot reports. The title also features an astounding cast of voice actors, including David Tennant Elodie Yung (Daredevil), (Doctor Who, Harry Potter), and Katheryn Winnick (Vikings)
