The world is expected to enjoy blindingly fast internet connection through 5G in a couple of years, but researchers recently developed a technology that is faster than even the fifth-generation wireless connection by a factor of ten. Using what they call a terahertz (THz) transmitter, transmission of data is increased significantly.
5G wireless connection is currently considered the faster wireless internet connection available. A lot of preparation has already gone into paving the way for the technology’s rollout to the rest of the world, which is expected to be complete by 2020, Futurism reports. However, this new discovery could throw a wrench in the gears, which users will likely applaud.
The terahertz technology was presented recently at San Francisco, California during the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC). It was created by a Japanese research team comprised of brilliant minds from Hiroshima University, Panasonic, and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology.
The wireless connection will make use of the bandwidth that ranges from 290 GHz to 315 GHz according to a press release. This bandwidth falls safely within the 275 GHz to 450 GHz parameters that were proposed and is set to be discussed during the 2019 World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC).
According to Prof. Minoru Fujishima from Hiroshima University, the transition from gigabits per second to terabits per second in the transference of data via wireless communication is momentous. The only kind of internet connection technology that even comes close is fiber optics.
“Terahertz could offer ultra high-speed links to satellites as well, which can only be wireless. That could, in turn, significantly boost in-flight network connection speeds, for example. Other possible applications include fast download from contents servers to mobile devices and ultrafast wireless links between base stations,” Prof. Fujishima said.
In any case, this new discovery is expected to have a huge impact on handling wireless technology going forward. What is clear is that the world could be looking at being able to download all of their favorite movies at 4K resolution in a space of several heartbeats.
