An Italian website has fueled excitement by hinting at a March 28 launch for the Nintendo Switch 2. With accessory details and advanced specs circulating, analysts predict strong sales fueled by anticipated titles like Metroid Prime 4.
Rumored March 28 Launch for Nintendo Switch 2
According to the Italian website UAGNA, both official and third-party Nintendo Switch 2 accessories will be available for purchase on March 28. Because of this, they also think this is the date the console will be released.
First things first: this is really preliminary. While not entirely implausible, it is quite unlikely. Another report surfaced last month that the system would be unveiled in January and then debut in late March. We found out about the potential announcement date on January 8, 2025, just recently.
There would be significant time savings compared to the previous schedule. Although Nintendo debuted the Switch on October 20, 2016, it did not go on sale until March 3, 2017. After a quick December demo on Jimmy Fallon's show, the system was officially unveiled in January during a press event that also revealed the final release date.
Speculated January Announcement Could Compress Launch Timeline
If these speculations are accurate, Nintendo might be cramming the whole reveal into January.
The details of the console have been leaked for quite some time, thus nothing new is likely to have come to light in that time. Once again, Nintendo has teamed up with NVIDIA, this time opting for their Tegra 239 system on a chip. This SoC is a tweaked take of the Orin SoC that was introduced in 2018.
NVIDIA Tegra 239 SoC to Power Nintendo Switch 2
An eight-core CPU with twelve ARM Cortex-A78AE cores and a graphics processing unit (GPU) based on the Ampere architecture with twenty-four thousand floating-point CUDA cores will power it. It is thought to have support for Ray Reconstruction and NVIDIA DLSS Super Resolution.
Per WCCFTECH, it appears, though, that while docked, the Nintendo Switch 2 can only produce 4K content at 30 frames per second. If true, it would be a huge letdown for a new system that launches in 2025, especially considering that Sony and Microsoft's competitor consoles have supported 60 fps and even 120 fps for a long time.
Analysts Optimistic About Nintendo Switch 2 Sales
Sales projections for the new hardware have analysts optimistic, with 80 million units sold by 2028 being the target.
Obviously, the games will have a significant impact. Despite the proven backward compatibility, the new hardware will require some fresh new titles to truly gain popularity. Perhaps the highly anticipated Metroid Prime 4 will launch cross-platform, similar to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the Switch.
