The highly anticipated next-generation Nintendo Switch is reportedly in the pipeline already. While Nintendo has yet to finalize many details, the upcoming gaming console is rumored to be released sometime in 2021 with several significant upgrades.
Next-generation Nintendo Switch rumored to launch in 2021
The latter part of 2019 was rife with speculations that the next-generation Nintendo Switch, dubbed by some as the Nintendo Switch Pro, could be slated to launch this year. However, the Japanese video game giant dismissed those with an official statement earlier this year saying a new hardware will not arrive in 2020.
Supply chain sources have reportedly told the Taiwanese publication Economic Daily News and Bloomberg said initial plans for the all-new Nintendo Switch are now on the table. Specifically, Nintendo could end up unveiling the new console sometime in early 2021. It can be recalled that the first Nintendo Switch was launched in March 2017.
The release of the upgraded Nintendo Switch is expected to happen along with the announcement and release of a list of games from Nintendo and third-party developers. Nintendo has been mum about some of the most anticipated games such as the sequel to “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” (announced during a 2019 Nintendo Direct) and “Metroid Prime 4” (teased during E3 2017). No update has been released since these upcoming titles were announced, and it is now unlikely for them to be released in the Fall.
What upgrades to expect from next-gen Nintendo Switch
Nintendo released a refreshed version of the console, but it was hardly a next-generation console considering the range of upgrades it features. This explains why fans of the portable gaming system remained on the lookout for the Nintendo Switch 2 to this day.
The same sources suggested that the hardware in the pipeline is going to be worthy of being called the Nintendo Switch 2 or the Nintendo Switch Pro. While details about the specs are reportedly not set in stone yet, Nintendo is said to be considering some serious upgrades such as a more powerful processor and a 4K display.
Why Nintendo skips 2020 for the next-gen Switch
It is now easier to understand why Nintendo opted not to make any major announcements in the hardware department. The remaining months of the year will be marked with the console wars between Sony and Microsoft with the imminent release of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
