Leaked by data miner OatmealDome, Nintendo's updated NintendoWare Bezel Engine reportedly supports frame rates potentially as high as 240FPS, a massive leap from the current 60FPS limit on the Nintendo Switch.
The Next-Gen Nintendo Switch 2 and 240FPS Gaming
According to a post by OatmealDome, a popular Nintendo dataminer on social media X, the newest version of the NintendoWare Bezel Engine supports higher frame rates, probably up to 240FPS, even though the Switch can only output 60FPS.
Variable Frame Rate and Enhanced Performance in Nintendo Switch 2
However, this improvement only applies to games that use the variable frame rate mode. Thus, it needs to be clarified whether previous engine versions have the same capabilities.
Endless Ocean Luminous incorporates the latest Bezel Engine version, discovered with the help of Watertoon, OatmealDome added. Previous versions of the Bezel Engine supported both WarioWare and Mario Party titles, Tetris 99, and several third-party Nintendo Switch titles.
Although the improved capabilities of the NintendoWare Bezel Engine point to a new frontier for game frame rates, the actual fun will be in seeing how this technology shapes up-and-coming titles.
Impact of Higher Frame Rates on the Nintendo Gaming Experience
Wccftech points out that while steady high frame rate support isn't certain, the Bezel Engine's capability to achieve 240FPS is an exciting possibility. This is especially important because the industry is waiting for the Nintendo Switch 2, which may use these cutting-edge technical features even more.
While it is highly doubtful that the new Nintendo system would have the power to offer 240FPS gaming, unless at very low resolutions, enabling higher framerates could pave the way for the 40FPS, 120 Hz modes found in some titles on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
With the Nintendo Switch 2 reportedly supporting NVIDIA DLSS, it wouldn't be shocking if some games took advantage of the upscaler to achieve gameplay speeds higher than 60 frames per second while docked.
