Nissin Foods USA revealed it has ditched its foam cups and shifted to using more eco-friendly packaging for its popular Cup Noodles. The company said that with this move, it will be phasing out polystyrene cups in 2024.
Historic Move to Reach Sustainability Goals
According to KTLA5 News, this is a historic change for Nissin Ramen noodles as it has been using foam packaging since the product was introduced in 1973. Moreover, cooking the noodles was also made easier; water boiling was eliminated after the cup material changed.
The ramen maker's move to stop using foam for its products aligns with its goal of becoming more earth-conscious and sustainable. Nissin Foods wants to reduce its carbon emissions by 30% by the year 2030 and eventually reach carbon neutrality by 2050
First-Ever Microvable Nissin Cup Noodles
The company said this would be the first time that Nissin Cup Noodles will no longer require boiling water because the ramen will be microwavable in the new paper cup packaging. This will reduce cooking time and make cooking even more convenient for everyone. The ramen is now ready to eat after being heated for two minutes and 15 seconds.
"Since its invention more than 50 years ago, Cup Noodles has become a cultural mainstay and a staple in households around the world," Nissin Foods USA president and chief executive officer Michael Price said in a press release. "And while Cup Noodles will continue to have that same satisfying taste and iconic look, we continue to find ways to evolve the brand to support the current needs of our consumers, the environment and the world."
He added, "This updated packaging and the new paper cup marks an important milestone for Cup Noodles and a key step in our environmental commitment."
Finally, Nissin USA's new packaging will be used for all flavors of its Cup Noodles. The company said that the ramen in new paper cups will be delivered to groceries and retail stores sometime in early 2024.
