Georgia's hopes for a deep postseason run took a significant hit after a 12-point loss to No. 16 Ole Miss. The loss highlighted offensive issues that have plagued the Bulldogs all season. Sacked four times and struggling with turnovers, Georgia couldn’t recover from a sluggish start and fierce Rebel defense.
Bulldogs’ Offensive Struggles, Costly Turnovers Seal Fate in Tough Loss to Ole Miss
On November 9, the No. 3 Georgia traveled to Oxford, Mississippi, to face the No. 16 Ole Miss Rebels, but the game went differently than planned, per 13WMAZ.
The Bulldogs struggled throughout the matchup, ultimately falling in their second-season loss, arguably their poorest performance. Georgia’s recurring issue this season—slowly starting on offense— again emerged. Against Ole Miss, the Bulldogs managed only 49 passing yards and 20 rushing yards in the first half. While Georgia had frequently been able to mount comebacks following slow starts this season, they could not recover this time.
In the third quarter, the Bulldogs put up only three points, hindered by a costly fumble from freshman running back Nate Frazier. By the fourth quarter, Georgia faced a 12-point deficit they could not overcome. Ole Miss’s defense proved relentless, sacking quarterback Carson Beck four times and recording eight tackles for loss, marking a season-high in sacks allowed by Georgia’s offensive line.
The Rebels’ defense further thwarted Georgia’s efforts with a crucial interception and a forced fumble in the fourth quarter, effectively ending any hopes of a comeback. This marked Beck’s fourth consecutive game with two or more turnovers and his fifth game this season.
Georgia’s only touchdown came after an interception by Dan Jackson early in the game, but aside from this, the Bulldogs struggled to capitalize on favorable field position.
Georgia Defense Falters Against Ole Miss, Narrowing Postseason Prospects Ahead of Tennessee Showdown
The Bulldogs' defense also faced challenges against Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart and the Rebels’ offense, which posted 28 points, including five field goals. Georgia’s defense held up against the run early, but Ole Miss’s quick-passing strategy, devised by head coach Lane Kiffin, consistently found success, tallying nearly 300 passing yards. Despite some defensive highlights, including five tackles for loss, Georgia’s pass rush was inconsistent, recording only one sack and failing to exert the same influence as in their previous game against Texas.
With their second loss, the Bulldogs' season is not over, but their postseason path has narrowed. Georgia faces a crucial regular-season test on Friday, November 15, when they host the top-10-ranked Tennessee Volunteers. A victory could keep their playoff hopes alive, but losing may end their chances. Although the SEC Championship is out of reach, Georgia’s postseason aspirations remain, though they hang by a thread.
The Bulldogs must address their issues as they prepare for Tennessee and adjust to keep their playoff hopes alive.
